CTHONIC DEITIES

return to home

The Gods Of the Underworld were named "Theoi Khthonioi" or Chthonian gods by the Ancient Greeks. They were ruled by and often accompanied Hades and his queen Persephone. These Gods often reside in the dark crevices of the mortal world, influencing mortals with their all-powerful abilities. If they do not reside in the mortal world, they can be found in the darkest pits of the Underworld serving the Lord and Queen of the Realm. Due to where they reside, they don't usually have many kids.

Hades

Persephone

Goddess of Vegetation, Spring Growth, and Queen of the Underworld.

Eris

Goddess of Chaos, Strife and Discord.

Thanatos

God of Gentle Death, Reaper of Souls and Lieutenant of Hades.

Melinoe

Goddess of Ghosts and Bringer of Madness.

Hecate

Goddess of Magic, Witchcraft, The Moon, Ghosts and The Crossroads.

Epiales

Hades

Lower Powers

Cryokinesis (Limited): Hades has the ability to emit a cold aura from his body, chilling his enemies to the bone. Some children of Hades inherit this ability, although not to the same extent as children of Poseidon or winter children of Aeolus. A child of Hades’ cryokinesis is much stronger when in shadowy areas and at night.
Death Sense: As the children of the lord of the underworld, Children of Hades can sense when and how the god of death, Thanatos, will come. When they sense that someone is about to die they will become jittery and anxious, and after several years of practice can even sense how they will die in the form of a mild sense of pains on their body that the victim will endure.
Geokinesis: Children of Hades can manipulate the ground, creating fissures or sensing and rerouting subterranean tunnels. This also makes them naturally experts in underground navigation. They may even be able to create holes in that earth that can instantly transport hostile enemies into the Underworld, holding them captive in their father's realm.
Ferrokinesis (Limited): Children of Hades are able to detect and manipulate precious metals. Users can sense and summon any quantity of precious metals and jewels from under the ground, as well as manipulate them. They may even be able to affect the temperature or these gems, causing them to become molten hot liquids capable of injuring nearby enemies.
Umbrakinesis: Children of Hades have control over darkness, and can cloak themselves in it as if tangible. A specific application of this power is shadow travel which is a form of teleportation through shadows and darkness. They may even be able to develop the ability to sense the appearance of illusions and hidden objects, though this is dependent on skill and the powers used to hide these objects or people.

Special Powers

Necromancy: Children of Hades can commune with, raise and control the dead, both human and not. Frequent and exhaustive use of this ability can drain the user’s own energy, which can become fatal if not treated or looked after carefully. All children with this ability are capable of seeing ghosts, and can even summon them.
Osteokinesis: Children of Hades are able to summon and control bones. With enough practice and skill, users can develop the ability to control the bones of the living. This could possibly allow them to change someone’s bone structure, or force them to behave a certain way. They may even be able to uproot skeletons from deep in the earth depending on experience.
Infernal Monster Lordship: As children of the lord of the underworld, children of Hades may inherit some of their father’s command over creatures of the underworld. However, this is only when it comes to creatures that have a particular disposition to the Underworld, such as hellhounds and furies. They may even be able to wipe a monster's memories, but there is a risk to themselves and the monster whenever they use this ability.

Attributes

Money is Power: Children of Hades are naturally good with money, in both earning, saving, and protecting it. When they hoard money, and amass a fortune, this strengthens the effectiveness of their other powers.
Fear Quality: Children of Hades often have an easier time causing demigods and mortals to feel scared of them. This allows them to cast a menacing aura around themselves, however this doesn’t work on those who are naturally forgiving and outgoing, but can work on the average demigod.
Vindictive: Hades is known for holding grudges, and some of his children also inherit this attribute. Children with this ability have a supernatural memory when it comes to holding grudges, and may even gain a supernatural attachment to those they despise. This ability makes the child vindictive, spiteful and aggressive.

Mandatory Traits

Way with Spirits: Children of Hades are naturally gifted at the detection, communing and taming of vengeful spirits. Even without necromancy or mediumship, they are capable of calming down angry spirits in the areas, and may even be able to send them back to the underworld if the spirit is willing.
Strong Scent: As one of the Big Three, Hades’ children have a naturally stronger scent to monsters and other supernatural threats. This makes it very difficult for Hades’ children to survive long in the mortal world for very long without intervention.
Photophobia: As God of the Underworld, Hades’ children do not like to be away from darkness or their father’s domain. While not a severe fear, they may feel discomfort in the light of any realm that isn’t their father’s and may choose to stay in enclosed, dark spaces because of this. They can become ill in someone else's domain for an extended period of time, i.e the Ocean or the Sky.
Prosperous Generosity: As God of Wealth, it may come to surprise you that Hades does not suffer from greed, nor do his children. Any golden possessions, trinkets or coins, are often given away. Children of Hades can become so generous that they give up love, or even life.

( optional traits include: Dark hair, pale skin, dark eyes, distrust for Olympians, and a specific hatred of Zeus and/or Poseidon. Most likely to suffer from holding grudges and excessive wrath)

Persephone

Lower Powers

Chlorokinesis: Children of Persephone are able to conjure, manipulate, and control plant life/vegetation. They are able to increase growth, adjust nutrients in the earth and summon flowers to their hands. They can turn people into flowers briefly. Many Children of Persephone can also manipulate the growth of plants, affecting the speed of growth or even enlarging them to enormous proportions.
Season Alteration (limited): Children of Persephone are able to heighten the temperature of the air, earth and water around them. They are able to generate pollen, light rain showers and can clear clouds out of the sky to reveal the sun. They also have an aura around them that brings animals towards them. They generally make the world around them more spring.
Mediumship: As the queen of the underworld, Persephone has great sway over its inhabitants, though less than that of her husband, Hades. Some of her children may inherit this sway over the dead. A lesser form of necromancy, this allows the demigod to summon, talk to, and command ghosts. All children with this ability are capable of seeing ghosts.
Cold Aura: Persephone, like her husband, has the ability to emit a powerful aura of bone chilling cold, albeit to a lesser extent than the lord of the dead. Some of her children may inherit this ability, allowing them to cause severe human discomfort and even frostbite and hypothermia for the experienced. Users of this ability have a resistance, though not total immunity, to the cold.
Geokinesis (Limited): Children of Persephone can create, shape and manipulate earth and "earthen" elements including most solid objects, specifically all minerals and mineral compositions regardless of their state. They are able to make fissures in the ground. While limited, children of Persephone may have some potential to develop Geokinesis on a level more powerful than that of Hades' children.

Special Powers

Umbrakinesis: The ability to generate and control shadows and the darkness, to a lesser degree of Hades’ children. Children of Persephone have an affinity for the darkness and dark places and are able to see in the dark. They are able to summon shadows, extend them out of their body and use them as if they were tangible.
Necromancy: Children of Persephone can commune with, raise and control the dead, both human and not. Frequent and exhaustive use of this ability can drain the user’s own energy, which can become fatal if not treated or looked after carefully. All children with this ability are capable of seeing ghosts, and can even summon them.
Travel Roses: Persephone is known for her Travel Roses which are capable of transporting a person to the land of the living from the Underworld. Some Children of Persephone are capable of using these roses to transport themselves across distances in the living world even if they aren’t in the underworld. As Travel Roses naturally grow around the Persephone Cabin, they’re not hard to find, but this ability can be untameable and runs the risk of splinching if the user isn’t careful.

Attributes

Green Thumb: Even without Chlorokinesis, some Children of Persephone have an innate connection to gardening, but more specifically the tending and cultivation of flowers and other ornamental plants.
Stygian Sleep: Just as their mother was able, some of Persephone’s children are able to handle and manipulate stygian sleep without feeling it’s effects. They cannot be cursed with it and are able to touch, and even bottle it where possible.
Fear Quality: Children of Persephone often have an easier time causing demigods and mortals to feel scared of them. This allows them to cast a menacing aura around themselves, however this doesn’t work on those who are naturally forgiving and outgoing, but can work on the average demigod.

Mandatory Traits

Temperature-Mental Moods: Due to the circumstances of their mother's disappearance in winter, Persephone’s children often have very temperamental moods. They will usually be happier or more upbeat during spring and summer, and their powers will be much easier to control. However, in Winter and Autumn, they may become glum, or sad and their powers will be less easy to control, and more destructive.
Godly Beauty: All of Persephone’s children are far more beautiful and alluring than the average demigod. This is different per person and their culture, but they are said to have a natural glow, and a charm to them that is undeniable to the naked eye, just as their mother’s beauty was said to have rivalled Aphrodite’s.
A Different Person: Persephone’s children are capable of changing their appearance during the warmer and cooler months. This can be evident in the darkening of their hair, lightening of skin and change in clothing during winter and autumn. This can also be shown in the lightening of their hair, darkening of skin, and change in clothing in summer and spring. They can appear to be vastly different people, just from the change in season, giving them some manner of appearance alteration.
Way with Spirits: Children of Persephone are naturally gifted at the detection, communing and taming of vengeful spirits. Even without necromancy or mediumship, they are capable of calming down angry spirits in the areas, and may even be able to send them back to the underworld if the spirit is willing.

( optional traits include: natural beauty, shifting appearance with the season, tall, and deathly pale. Most likely to suffer from envy or curiosity.)

Eris

Lower Powers

Umbrakinesis(limited): As a goddess of the underworld, Eris possesses the ability to control shadows and darkness-though to a lesser extent than her king and queen. Her children can possess the ability to manipulate darkness and shadows to a limited extent, being capable of cloaking themselves in darkness and even making weakened shadow constructs.
Eris’ Apple: Eris is most well known for using her golden apple to spark chaos among the Olympians, for which she was cast down from the heavens. Her children may possess the same ability, though to a much more limited ability, where they will summon the golden fruit and toss it into a group of two people or more, sparking chaos. The severity of the chaos and how big the group it can affect is determined by the skill and experience of the child.
Madness Manipulation (Limited): As children of the goddess of chaos, children of Eris can manipulate madness to a minor extent. They can loosen people’s impulse control, causing a seemingly normal person to lose their impulse control and do something they normally wouldn’t do. The effectiveness of this power depends on several factors, such as whether the target knows they’re being targeted, how much willpower they have in relation to the user and the user’s skill and experience.
Teacher’s Pet: As a child of the god of chaos, many of Eris’ children are predisposed to not liking authority of any kind. As a result, Eris often blesses her children with the ability to appear to the liking of any authority figure. This allows them to get away with a multitude of things, the severity of which depends on their skill and experience of the user, and if the authority figure knows they are a child of Eris.
Law and Disorder: As a child of the god of chaos, a child of Eris may be capable of supernaturally overwriting and altering a rule or law to make it not apply to them. The effectiveness of this power is dependent on many factors, such as the severity of the law and the skill and experience of the user. Using this power in excess can often backfire resulting in the child being seeked out by the authorities regardless of whether they broke a rule or not.

Special Powers

Song of Chaos: An extension of law and disorder, this ability allows the user to let out a gut wrenching scream spanning anywhere between a 1 and 10 mile radius, depending on the strength of the child and the severity of the law they try to ignore. Anyone within the radius is also capable of ignoring the law with little consequence, even if the child of Eris wishes it not be so, though they can exclude certain individuals from this radius with experience.
Suffer and Strife: As a child of the goddess of chaos, Eris’ children are capable of turning strife and chaos into a wild, black flame. This black flame is extremely bright and powerful, but can only go on as long as the child continuously feeds it. Further more, this flame is only as strong as the chaos in the area, and the stronger it is, the more uncontrollable it becomes.
Protection Charm: As a child of the god of chaos and strife, Eris’ children must not only be able to cause chaos, but also defend against it. Children with this ability are capable of creating an intangible, invisible shield around a number of objects-dependent on the skill and experience of the child-in a chaotic area to protect. The strength of this shield depends on the willpower, skill and energy of the child, and how severe the chaos in the area is.

Attributes

Fear Quality: Children of Eris often have an easier time causing demigods and mortals to feel scared of them. This allows them to cast a menacing aura around themselves, however this doesn’t work on those who are naturally forgiving and outgoing, but can work on the average demigod.
Propulsion: Some of Eris’ children are capable of harnessing the power of their mothers wings of sleep, even without having Wings of Chaos. This allows them to propel towards enemies nearby, or quickly dodge someone's attack. This has limitations, and while in motion, makes them very, very vulnerable.
In Arms: Some children of Eris are naturally on good terms with Hermes and his children, and will gain a boost to their abilities, health, and strength while working with them. However, these statistics will be weakened if they are working or battling against a child of Hermes.

Mandatory Traits

Lying Brilliance: All of Eris’ children are incredible liars, much like their mother. They can often trick mortals, and the average demigod with ease. It makes their lies more resistant to truth manipulation, but not completely safe from these abilities.
Discorded: Children of Eris are more susceptible to chaos, strife and discord, and are more likely to slip into minor madness than the average demigod. While not as strong as Madness, these fits of strife can last far longer and cause the child to use their abilities recklessly.
Many Track Mind: Eris has been feared not just for her abilities, but also her cunning intelligence and wit. Her children have inherited this trait and are often more intelligent when it comes to manipulating and understanding the world around them. They are also quite ambitious and cunning as a result.
Clandestine: A master of disguises and stealth, Eris blessed her children with an inherent ability to sneak around others for their own gain. While they cannot become invisible nor silent, they are naturally less likely to get caught and again an agility, flexibility and stealth boost when causing chaos or strife upon others.

( optional traits include: Dark hair and features, smug smiles, blood-red lips, and being despised by Olympians. Most likely to suffer from ambition and hubris)

Thanatos

Lower Powers

Hebekinesis(limited): As the god of death, Thanatos is capable of accelerating the process of aging and withering-though to a lesser extent than Hebe and her children. Children of Thanatos may inherit this ability, with which they are able to age a person significantly-though with the risk of health problems and even death should the child of Thanatos over extend their abilities.
Death’s Memory: Children of Thanatos can physically touch a spirit and relive their memories. This can range from just their death for the more inexperienced, but can extend to a spirit's whole life for a more experienced user. Beginner children of Thanatos are not able to relive more than one memory or to select the memory they wish to relive, but more experienced children are able to do this-though it is much more taxing than just relieving a random memory of the spirit.
Death Sense (enhanced): Like children of Hades, children of Thanatos are capable of sensing their father’s coming. But unlike the children of Hades, their sense is much more precise, being able to pinpoint exactly how the person is going to die as a form of precognition. Though they can do something to prevent this death, they will only be delaying fate and Thanatos will eventually come-for their soul if they tamper enough. More experienced users can develop the capability to hold their father back long enough for the cause of death to be healed, though this often comes with permanent side effects.
Umbrakinesis: As an underworld god, Thanatos has absolute and complete authority over shadows and darkness-though to a lesser extent than Hades. Children of Thanatos are capable of completely cloaking themselves in darkness, making them incredibly hard to detect unless sought after by other umbrakinetics of similar skill levels. They may also be able to shadow travel in short distances and make weaker physical constructs, though these are both incredibly exhausting for the child to maintain.
Mediumship: As the god of death, Thanatos is capable of summoning spirits and guiding them to the underworld. Some of Thanatos’ children also inherit this ability, but they are not capable of controlling them-merely talking to them. Spirits are more likely to talk to the child of Thanatos then they are other demigods.

Special Powers

Wings of Death: Children of Thanatos often develop the ability to summon wings reminiscent of that of their fathers. These wings are often described to look as if they are made of bone and shadow, and at higher levels may even give off an aura of fear and dread to any who see them. These wings will work best in either shadow areas or in areas with high concentration of the dead.
Cloak: Thanatos used to show himself to those he came to collect, but has since stopped Sisyphus' shenanigans. Some of Thanatos’ children are capable of cloaking themselves, making themselves completely invisible-though lower level users can be detected by sound and smell. Higher level users become completely intangible to all senses-though maintaining this is very taxing.
Death’s Lullaby: Some of Thanatos’ children are capable of putting their targets in a state of death like sleep. In this state, their target's heart rate will slow down immensely, to the point where it can even be mistaken for death. Those who are in this state will not need food or water. Putting others in this state is extremely risky and less skilled children of Thanatos may lose control of this state.

Attributes

Fear Quality: Children of Thanatos often have an easier time causing demigods and mortals to feel scared of them. This allows them to cast a menacing aura around themselves, however this doesn’t work on those who are naturally forgiving and outgoing, but can work on the average demigod.
Under the Night Sky: Some of Thanatos’ Children gain additional strength and power from being up at the latest hours of the night, which makes their senses sharper, and their powers stronger at night.
Propulsion: Some of Thanatos’ children are capable of harnessing the power of their father’s wings of sleep, even without having Wings of Death. This allows them to propel towards enemies nearby, or quickly dodge someone's attack. This has limitations, and while in motion, makes them very, very vulnerable.

Mandatory Traits

Open Death’s Door: Thanatos and his children are some of the only beings that are not affected by the change in realms. While under another gods domain, Thanatos’ offspring will feel no discomfort, illness or pain and they also have a higher chance of exploring and visiting the domain of another God without consequence. They can also pass through the doors of Death without punishment.
Godly Duties: Thanatos is well known for loyalty to his master and to his duties, even resisting being with the woman he loves. His demigod children have inherited this inability to defy their duties as well, which causes internal conflict. They are less likely to suffer from temptations, and even have a heightened resistance to illusions or tricks because of it.
Love in War: Children of Thanatos are often on good terms with war gods and their children, and will often have natural skills in combat due to this inherent connection. While they may not like to participate in war, they are naturally good allies and comrades in battle.
Sensitivity: All of Thanatos’ children have a natural attunement to the power of life force. However, this makes them incredibly sensitive and susceptible to changes in their own life forces. They are incredibly sensitive to pain and illness as they can literally feel their life force ebbing and fluctuating. Even if the injury is small, it can feel like a limb is being removed to a child of Thanatos. In some cases, this feeling may extend to other people’s injuries.

( optional traits include: Dark hair and skin, deep, soothing voices, as well as tall and imposing appearances. Most likely to suffer from detachment and determination.)

Melinoe

Lower Powers

Death Sense: As children of the goddess of ghosts, children of Melinoe have the ability to sense when a person or animal close to them nears the end of their life. Their death sense is stronger than that of a child of Hades, but weaker than that of a child of Thanatos. Often, this manifests as slight pain in the form of the lethal wound, such as a slight stinging for a stab wound or a slight headache for blunt force trauma. This pain gradually gets stronger as death nears.
Face of the Damned: Melinoe is very well known for her terrifying appearance, often described as a halfway point between a ghost and a mummy. Her children are able to tap into a minor form of the same state, where the color drains from their face and their eyes turn into a black void. This state induces fear into opponents, to such a degree that some may turn tail and run or even faint.
Astral Projection: Some children of Melinoe are naturally very attuned with their souls and their life forces, and for this reason, may be able to exit their body to go to another room or to even teleport to another area entirely with their soul. Sufficiently skilled users may even be able to possess corpses, and in the case of extremely powerful users, living bodies. If they spend too much out of their own body their soul is destroyed.
Life Force Manipulation: Some of Melinoe’s children are capable of using their extreme attunement to their own life force to use it for a variety of purposes. They can decrease their own to enter a state of hibernation, or use it to heal the wounds of others, and even create physical constructs with it. This is a very dangerous process and overuse of the ability can even result in divine retribution from death deities.
Mediumship: As children of the goddess of ghosts, children of Melinoe often have the ability to summon and command ghosts. Ghosts have a predisposal to the child due to the child’s parentage, but recently deceased spirits, or the spirits of powerful individuals are often particularly defiant. Some of Melinoe’s children with exceptional skills can “Consume” these ghosts, adding to their own strength.

Special Powers

Dance of the Damned: Some of Melinoe’s children with medium man ship can make the ghosts they summon tangible, being able to fling them at enemies and form them into various constructs. Children of Melinoe with this ability must be careful, as damage to the objects means destroyed spirits and thus weakening of their mother’s domain, which she takes very seriously and is often punishable by near death.
Phobokinesis: Some children of Melinoe are capable of manipulating the emotion of fear. They can cast illusions over themselves to resemble the person or object a person fears the most. This works best if the child knows the fears of the victim, but sufficiently skilled children are capable of inducing a state of sinister unease and fear so powerful that even those that do not know them become terrified. This ability works to a lesser degree if the victim is a naturally courageous individual or has abilities that counteract this.
Ghost Form: As children of the goddess of ghosts, children of Melinoe are capable of inducing a ghost-like state on their own bodies, granting themselves intangibility for a short period of time in order to dodge attacks or to travel between walls and other barriers, whether magical or otherwise. Staying in this state for too long will often result in death of the user or severe losses such as losing a limb or appendage.

Attributes

Terror Quality: Children of Melinoe are capable of causing demigods and mortals to feel terror and fear around them. This is even stronger than any other chthonic god. However this doesn’t work on those who are naturally forgiving and outgoing, but can work on the average demigod, and those who are not easily scared,
Surrounded by Death: Melinoe blesses some of her children with intense strength, power and energy while surrounded by the dead, witnessing a memorial, or within the underworld. They become far stronger than the average demigod, which increases the effectiveness of their abilities.
Under the Night Sky: Some of Melinoe’s Children gain additional strength and power from being up at the latest hours of the night, which makes their senses sharper, and their powers stronger at night.

Mandatory Traits

Way with Spirits: Children of Melinoe are naturally gifted at the detection, communing and taming of vengeful spirits. Even without necromancy or mediumship, they are capable of calming down angry spirits in the areas, and may even be able to send them back to the underworld if the spirit is willing.
Haunting Heart: Melinoe’s children are capable of haunting the living in a similar way to their mothers, and the ghosts she commands. This allows them to cast illusions of themselves around their victims, as well as whisper things in their victims ears from far away. However, these illusions are fairly weak and can be detected by anyone with enhanced clear sight or truth sense.
Cynophobia: Melinoe is said to be the reason why Dogs bark at nothing at night, and it is the constant barking that has given Melinoe a severe fear of Dogs. Just as their mother did, Melinoe’s children have a severe fear of dogs and hearing them bark or make loud noises can cause both illness and discomfort. Dogs can also sense when they are in the area, which causes them to stay away.
Coin: As their mother is often seen with two sides, her children have inherited an innate ability to see the two sides of a person, or situation with ease. They may be able to see both the good, and bad in a person or event as well as see how to resolve this.

( optional traits include: Feared by children of Olympians, heterochromia, dual personalities, asymmetrical faces, cold hands, empty eyes. Most likely to suffer from The Past and hatred.)

Hecate
